Facing pressure from state investigators and calls for greater transparency from the faithful, New Jersey’s five Roman Catholic dioceses on Wednesday released the names of nearly 190 priests who they said had been credibly accused of sexually abusing minors over decades.
All five Catholic dioceses in New Jersey voluntarily released the names of the clergymen who have admitted to, were found guilty of, and “against whom the evidence was so overwhelming as to be virtually unquestionable” of committing sexual abuse of a minor.

Recent investigations have uncovered widespread sexual abuse occurring across a wide range of institutions and organizations, such as hospitals, clinics, schools, universities, sports programs, churches (i.e Catholic and non-Catholic clergy members), Boys & Girls Scouts of America, YMCA/YWCA, boys & girls clubs, daycare, etc..
In New York, New Jersey and Vermont, either new temporary or permanent laws have recently been passed to remove the statute of limitations which have prevented some victims of childhood sexual abuse from going to court seeking damages in the past. In New York, the statute of limitations don’t apply to victims of childhood sexual abuse as long as they file a claim by January 14th, 2021. In New Jersey, the statute of limitations don’t apply to as long as childhood sexual abuse victims file a claim by November 30th, 2021. In Vermont, their new law reflects that, in addition to their statute of limitations no longer applying to victims of childhood sexual abuse, it’s permanently in effect.
